Shopify to Square Online

Consolidating online and in-person commerce when a Square seller no longer needs Shopify’s additional depth.

Shopify to Square Online

This migration is about operational fit

Shopify is a mature ecommerce platform, and many businesses should remain on it. The case for moving becomes stronger when a business already uses Square in person and wants online orders, inventory, catalog management, and payments to operate in the same system.

Consolidation can reduce duplicate entry and reconciliation work, but it does not automatically eliminate every subscription, integration, or reporting task. We review the complete setup before comparing costs.

When Square Online may fit better

Square Online deserves consideration when:

  • Square already handles in-person sales
  • Pickup, local delivery, restaurant ordering, or straightforward shipping are central
  • Shared inventory across the counter and website would simplify daily work
  • The catalog and variant rules fit Square’s item model
  • The business does not depend on Shopify-specific apps or checkout behavior

Catalog size alone is not the deciding factor. Square supports large item libraries, but complexity in subscriptions, bundles, international selling, fulfillment, reporting, or integrations may still favor Shopify.

When Shopify remains the better platform

Stay on Shopify when ecommerce is the primary operation and the business depends on its deeper app ecosystem, complex merchandising, multiple currencies or markets, advanced shipping rules, subscriptions, or specialized reporting.

The cost of replacing essential functionality can outweigh the benefit of consolidating with Square.

What transfers and what does not

The migration begins with exports and a field-by-field review, not an assumption that the two systems use the same data model.

  • Products and variants can be prepared for Square’s item import, but categories, options, modifiers, inventory, images, and other fields need mapping and verification.
  • Customer contacts can be imported into Square Customer Directory when the available fields and permissions allow it. Shopify passwords, customer account history, saved payment details, and marketing consent do not become equivalent Square account data automatically.
  • Historical orders remain available through Shopify exports or another agreed archive. They do not become native historical Square transactions through a standard catalog or customer import.
  • Content pages and the storefront design are rebuilt in Square Online.
  • Apps, discounts, gift cards, subscriptions, loyalty, shipping logic, and outside integrations are reviewed individually for a Square equivalent or a new process.

URLs and launch planning

Product, collection, and content URLs are inventoried before the new storefront is structured. Existing addresses are retained when Square permits it. Changed URLs receive permanent redirects to relevant destinations, with special attention to product and category pages that already earn traffic or links.

Checkout, taxes, shipping, pickup, delivery, notifications, inventory, analytics, domains, and payment flows are tested before launch. The old Shopify data is exported and retained according to the agreed handover plan.

Most Shopify-to-Square migrations take two to four weeks. Catalog quality, app dependencies, customer data, fulfillment rules, and storefront changes can extend the work.

What happens next

Tell us how the business sells in person and online, which Shopify apps it relies on, and what is difficult about the current setup. We will compare both options before recommending a move.
